I have a friend with progressive Lyme Disease. She needs ,000 for treatment that insurance does not cover. She has four children to take care of and I really want to help her find a way to fund a cure. The site is: www.HelpShawnaFightLymeDisease.com. Any suggestions on how to make the site better would be great too.

The first thing you should do is get actual non-profit status from the IRS and your state. If you don’t, people can’t deduct donations they make to you, and you’ll have to pay taxes on everything you receive. Willing it to be a not-for-profit does not make it so. You have to register.

Then post your status (once received) clearly on your site so that people feel more comfortable donating. Many people are wary of random charities, so you having legal status as a not-for-profit will help. You can also go to websites like Guidestar and CharityNavigator.org and apply to be listed.

Good luck to you! And to Shawna. :0)

Unless you are registered with IRS as a 501C, you cannot call it a non-profit site. I am sorry she has Lyme, but why doesn’t the children’s father help? I also suggest a different doctor since usually Lyme is treated with Anitbiotics and this does not come close to $40,000.
