Yahoo Answers… Useful or just landfill?

I thought for a bit that "Yahoo Answers" was a really useful tool for us all. But then I began to read some of the questions. It almost seems that most of them are just kiddy babble, bordering on the mentality of the everyday chat room. Do you think Yahoo knew this when they started this? Are they gathering useful marketing information?

Just a while ago I saw a question "How long do Guinea pigs live?" I thought, well I’ll just Google it and get the answer, as this sort of question should have loads of hits and answers. I was going to answer the question by telling the person to just google that very question and you would be surprised at what you can find…. as apposed to using Yahoo Answers. Well, not look who was surprised, yup, me! What I got was a search page full of "Yahoo answers!"

So, is Yahoo polluting the internet with non-biodegradable junk?
Jennifer: I was well aware of the "trash" I was producing and thought that perhaps one plastic bottle on your lawn, or the lawns of those who read this, might raise the "awareness" up to pay for the bottle!! I’d give you a thumbs up, but I haven’t created enough landfill yet!

I am impressed by your thinking. But yahoo answers really helps in some advising sections such as relationships, some homework but you are right most of the stuff is very useless. I read questions such as "do you think I am good looking?" what is wrong with people who post questions like this?????????

Its a useful resource when your question isn’t something that you can simply Google. Unfortunately, it seems like a lot of people must use Y!A as their default search engine and expect someone else to answer their question for them.

Though a question for you: doesn’t asking this make you feel bad for contributing to the landfill, or do you just see it as one more plastic bottle tossed in the garbage?

Pretty much a landfill.

Some of the questions and answers are pretty useful, though :D

Lol, yes. I don’t think Yahoo know what this site is for even now. On the one hand they keep telling us they want this to be a serious knowledge site, but this is contradicted by the whole set up of points and levels. I doubt Yahoo care too much though, as long as they are raking in the money from advertisements ….. ah of course that is what the site is for lol – lots of clicks for the advertisers. As long as the site is popular, which I suppose it is (well we’re still here), Yahoo are happily making money and they don’t seem to care at all about all the glitches which we have been suffering from for some weeks.

Btw, answering questions with "Google it" is expressly forbidden in the Community Guidelines as a point-gaming violation, just so you know.
