Wiccans, Pagans, and other Magick users: Purchasing a Wand and Broom?
Ok, this may seem like a strange question, but I am very curious. I was browsing the internet looking at different wands and brooms, most of which looked very chinsy. Then I came across a site that sold both. The brooms and wands are all wood, hand made, and custom made to order. The wands even come with a satin or velvet bag for protection. However, the site seems to market more towards collectors and Harry Potter fans. Since these are only tools meant to help you focus your intent and in some cases to store spells, I do not see why they wouldn’t work for my practice. Do you know any reason why these would be inadequate? Thanks for your time. Light and Blessings -Lindsay
Here’s the site: http://www.alivans.com/welcome.htm
Because of the great price, I was thinking about getting the Apprentice Wand (The title works since I am still fairly new to Wicca): http://www.alivans.com/custom/cart/edit.asp?p=95872
Before any of you say this, I know that it is best to make my own wand or broom because my energies will fuse with it better, but I just don’t see this ever happening. If I do buy a wand or broom, I will put the extra time necessary into cleansing and molding it to me.
To be Clear: I am not looking to buy at this moment. I am perfectly content with just using my hands and strong intent. However, someday I would like to branch out into using wands and brooms and I was just curious to see if these would work. Thanks again ![]()
You guys have all been so awesome and helpful. Thank you sooo much!

honestly, anything will work for you…I have a collection of wands made with all sorts of materials.
However, your tools will work best for you if you make them yourself.
my favortite wand is one that I ‘accidentally’ made one day while trimming flowers…it’s just a plain flower stem that dried…and it’s perfect.
well i’m not a wiccan i will just say that..
i’m a traditional witch and the way i see it is,
tools are just that.. tools, it doesn’t matter where it comes from
as long as you give it a purpose and give it life
i have seen some really nice wands on there i even want to buy one
just because i like to collect wands and the such
i craft very nice wands and brooms i have been since i was very young
in traditional witchcraft the only real tool that is needed is the witch
all the other things are there just to help you focus
we really don’t use tools that much.. unless the witch wishes too
or if they go with the witches tradition.. in my tradition we have alot of things we use for magick.. i also practice hoodoo
the main tools i use are the stang, cauldron & broom..
but i also love my wands..
all in all its really up to you.. what do you think is right?
what do you feel like you should do..
that the main thing i dislike about wicca
there are all these books and people telling you how u have to do this or how to do that.. its foolish, now i understand you are new and looking for guidance and these books can be great to help you on your path.. but u don’t have to do everything they say or the way the say to do it… its mainly up to you.. your the witch who uses the tool
so u use what tool you want and how you want to use it.
its as simple as that. i wish you luck on your path
always know that this path is your path..
don’t let other tell you how to do things,
in truth how do you think the first witch did thing?
she listened to her heart and to the great spirits to guide her
she found her way and so shall you..
just follow your heart and you will be doing just fine
Yes, it’s great to make your own tools, but you can buy them.
Then only thing about buying them is that you have to be able to see it and touch it and feel it’s vibe intuitively.
If an internet site will allow you to return the item for a full refund it’s OK. You can return it if it doesn’t feel right.
Very, very important that the tool feels comfortable to you. That it’s something that feels good, and special and powerful to you.
If you feel the need to use one, and you don’t feel like making it, I don’t see why these wouldn’t work. Especially since you already know you will need to put forth some extra effort.
You know, you really should just make your own broom and wand as it infuses it with more of your own energies (
Sorry, couldn’t resist, I know that repetition is a tough habit to break).
Whatever you feel comfortable with will work for you. If you wish to use this type of wand, then go for it. You can’t practice with full intent and concentration if you have tools you are not happy/comfortable with. If you like this wand, by all means, get it.
Happy Purchasing
(FWIW) Consider this site:
It doesn’t matter what it was originally made for. If you think it will be helpful for you, then its a good choice for you.
People who claim their products have special super-duper blessings are shams.
I know plenty of pagans who get their tools at Wal-Mart. Its all an issue of preference.
Funny you should ask this question, I just bought 2 Alivan’s wands last week. "The Merlin" wand and a Solitaire design wand, one of a kind. These are the best wands I’ve ever had in my life, better than the pewter or crystal wands, and a better quality than any I could make by hand.
There is no rule that says to use a tool well you have to make the tool. I don’t see people making their own cauldrons, for example, so what is the huge difference with wands? You could take a chopstick or a wooden spoon — a toothpick — and use it as a wand even. It doesn’t matter where you get it; what matters is how you use it.
Stick with using your hands… that way you’ve always
got them with you.
check out isis.com they have a goodly selection of wands, brooms, cauldrens and just about everything else you could posibly need. and their prices are fair considering the quality of the items in question.
happy hunting and blessed be!
I travelled some way to harvest wood for my wand.
In harvesting it, I slipped and cut myself. I guess this blood was the cost of harvesting the wood.
I shaped it, not a complex shape, just removed bark, knots etc, no real skill required.
I sanded the finished product and seared the ‘handle’ in a Samhain fire, applied some simple lacquer for basic protection and now have a very unique tool.
I’m no craftsman, not by a long shot, but I’d recommend doing it yourself… for one thing it’s cheaper, but it also turns out a more magical product, and it becomes a unique tool made just for you.
Now having said that, by all means buy a wand, and athame, any tool. Even the search for the right tool brings it closer to you, and any tool is going to assist focusing the energies used in magic.
My favourite wand is still my right hand, my willow wand however is a beautiful piece of work and sits on my altar next to my purchased athame and op-shop chalice.

Wands serve the same purpose as athames, to channel energy. Of course athames are also used for cutting, etc and so on, but a wand and athame come hand in hand. This site seemed sketchy considering it has its own Twilight section. I would look for a metaphysical shop that’s local or maybe even branch out and take a long ride to one out of your area.
It’s worth it. You can just purchase an athame if you please, but one or the other- even both can serve different purposes. I would try looking for local shops on http://www.witchvox.com It’s an amazing resource
!
As for broom, look for one in person because some websites just can’t be trusted. Even purchasing a small one works as well. We have on hanging in our house to keep away bad energies, aka sweeping it away. (: I hope I have been helpful and good luck on your path!
Bright blessings, Emily.
Edit: Like the previous answer, making one yourself is even better- and it can just be a plain stick from the outdoors. Look around and pick up random sticks aiming to feel its energy. Just do this until you find one that feels right. Try not to rip branches off from bushes, trees- but if you do I would suggest apologizing and blessing the plant from which you took.
