If a freak accident caused electricity to cease, would mankind unite for the common good?

A freak solar flare strikes Earth. It’s massive. In hitting our planet, it instantly causes everything that uses electric to stop working. It also causes the Earths magnetic field to fluctuate so none of our "tools" that depend on electric or any of the electric generators will work. This fluctuation lasts years. It means that none of our transport works, so food cannot get to the shops. Canned food is no more. As are ready made meals. Our water sewage plants cease to function, so it is dumped directly in the rivers. Lights don’t work. Hospital treatment is crippled. The stock market is over ~ it relied on electric. Intensive farming is no more, as the machinery used, no longer works. All the information on the internet is lost. Our water supply, stops too, as it had often been pumped to get it to us. Even the solar and wind turbines, no longer work. We had, in essence, put all our eggs in one basket ~ the electric basket…

Could you survive on the knowledge you hold?

We should work together, but would we?

Please, if you have any thoughts on how we would cope, I’d like to hear them.

All answers are appreciated. All thoughts welcome.

I do not give thumbs down ~ ever

Thank you for answering…
These are great answers everyone. I am enjoying reading what you have to say…

Most of us are so dependant on technology that we dont know how to survive for ourselves. There’d be pandamonium, looting, going through extremes to survive. The interesting part is that in some parts of the world there are cultures of people that live normal happy lives without our technology, they live in lifestyles unchanged for thousands of years. Nothing would affect them, we could learn a thing or two from them while we still have the chance, and I personally believe that our dependance on technology could be a downfall.

No I could not survive.

We should, but we wont.

At first thered be mass chaos, but hopefully after people realize how barbaric and useless the violence would be, we could join together and reteach our survival skills.

No really, think about it

Most would unite for good, others will take advantage and rob you in the dark

i dont think wed be here long enough to learn how to cope

Would they unite for the common good? Well good and evil are perspective, would they united for self preservation? Of that I have no doubt in my mind. Think of the panic something like you describe would set off, I would ponder that for at least the first few months following such an event human kind would be rather unorganized, set into panic, trying to figure out what happen and what they are going to do. I believe governments in those regions would set in place martial law. Fast forward past the cluster f**k that would be our world?

We have the knowledge and information to restore electricity and I believe we would unite to do this out of common self interest and to restore our modern lives and business… Skip ahead about 50 years past this event and we were able to go back to the way it was, that level of support and aid for each other would again fall apart as we again have our glowing, shiny and pretty little toys back which pulls us from each other.

likes to think we’d help each other out…

yes we could survive… we know which plants we can eat and how to hunt and fish…

we would still have simple gas powered machines too, and guns…

Yay! I would rather enjoy that.

We are uniting for a common good in Haiti. <}:-})

i think that allot of the people who live in cities that depend so much on technology would die.

"i live back in the woods, you see. the woman, and the kids and the dogs and me. i got a shotgun, a rifle and a four wheel drive, and a country boy can survive."-from the song "a country boy can survive".

yes i would be able to survive, me being in a small town. i know how to hunt and fish. it would be every man for himself, but travelling in a group of 2 people would be best. i would take my motorcycle(dr200se), fill it with gas from the car, loot the grocery store and fill up a backpack with food, go to my friend’s place and get a .22 rifle from him and some shells, welcome him to come along, then i would head for the mountains that are about 120km away in a truck with my motorcycle on the back, along with a generator, some jerry cans of gas, my shortwave radio, and my laptop. the reason for the electronics is that i know how to isolate them in a solar storm situation like this so that they may work. i would live up there for a year or two, and when i could be sure that the riots have settled down, i would venture back down from the mountains back to civilization, if there is any left. i bet that only 10% of the earth’s population would survive.

I would grind your bones to make my bread and consume it quietly in the dark.

Within a particular area in disasters, most people will rally together in a united spirit of helpfulness. Forgetting petty differences. But other countries not so affected will take advantage in some instances. there are some real nasties out there. Look at what is happening in Haiti, the USA army has moved in and is turning away aid and relief shipments.

Practicing Shaman…. quantum physics rocks

I think it would turn ugly after awhile. We kill each other over less now & fear & need to survive brings out the self preservation in everyone. I would like to be wrong but I don’t think I am.
