I don’t really understand how those affiliate programs work. does anyone know of tried and true ways to start using my website to earn a lot of money?

You can generate a fair amount of revenue, depending on your website hits, by using Google’s AdSense (Small text ads on your page)

Affiliate programs are a great way to make money with your web site. When you join an affiliate program network, you can choose which individual programs to go with — all in one place. There is some pretty big $$ to be made too. I have a site about snowboarding and made a couple thousand dollars last winter selling snowboards through the site. The affiliate network provides me the code to put on my site and that’s it… easy! Here is an example if affiliate advertising on a web site http://www.frostyrider.com
